A Correlated Random Effects Model for Nonignorable Missing Data in Value-added Assessment of Teacher Effects

چکیده
Abstract. Value-added models have been widely used to assess the contributions of individual teachers and schools to students’ academic growth based on longitudinal student achievement outcomes. There is concern, however, that ignoring the presence of missing values, which are common in longitudinal studies, can bias teachers’ value-added scores. In this article, a flexible correlated random effects model is developed that jointly models the student responses and the student missing data indicators. Both the student responses and the missing data mechanism depend on latent teacher effects as well as latent student effects, and the correlation between the sets of random effects adjusts teachers’ value-added scores for informative missing data. The methods are illustrated with data from calculus classes at a large public university and with data from an elementary school district.

Estimation of Random-Effects Model for Longitudinal Data with Nonignorable Missingness using Gibbs Sampling
The missing data problem is common in longitudinal or repeated measurements data. When the missingness mechanism is nonignorable, the distribution of the observed response and indicators of missingness should be modelled jointly using either ‘shared random-effects model’ or ‘correlated random-effects model’. However, computational challenges arise in the model fitting due to intractable numeric...
متن کاملLikelihood-based Inference with Nonignorable Missing Responses and Covariates in Models for Discrete Longitudinal Data
We propose methods for estimating parameters in two types of models for discrete longitudinal data in the presence of nonignorable missing responses and covariates. We first present the generalized linear model with random effects, also known as the generalized linear mixed model. We specify a missing data mechanism and a missing covariate distribution and incorporate them into the complete dat...
متن کاملUse of auxiliary data in semi-parametric spatial regression with nonignorable missing responses
We propose a method for reducing the error of the prediction of a quantity of interest when the outcome has missing values that are suspected to be nonignorable and the data are correlated in space. We develop a maximum likelihood approach for the parameter estimation of semi-parametric regressions in a mixed model framework. We apply the proposed method to phytoplankton data collected at fixed...

Lost in Translation? Teacher Training and Outcomes in High School Economics Classes Using data on 24 teachers and 982 students from a 2006 survey of California high school economics classes, we assess the effects of student and teacher characteristics on student achievement. We estimate value-added models of outcomes on multiple choice and essay exams, with matched classroom pairs for each teac...

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the economic effects of amendment of law of value added tax in Iran. The research method is quantitative and standard CGE model of Lafgren et al (2002) is used for analyzing. Data are derived from the latest Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) of Iran in 2011, which is provided by the Research Center of the Parliament. The data are analyzed in the form of ...
